Flotsam & Jetsam Artist Beach Hostel

December 21, 2015

As you may know, I drove up north to the fun-filled province of La Union about a month ago for a business trip, as well as to celebrate a long weekend with my colleagues. (If you haven't read the story yet, you can find it here!) Although we weren't lodged there, most of our work was done in this wonderful beachside place called Flotsam & Jetsam Artist Beach Hostel.

Found on Manila North Road in San Juan, F&J is a laid-back hostel that features a lodging area, a bar and cafe, and gardens with a stunning waterfront view where their festivals and other events are held. I immediately understood why F&J was considered the best tambayan (chill spot) in town by many people. The moment I marched down the entrance walkway and saw the outdoor grounds, the cool and relaxed vibe was just so easily observable, as well as the good music. We were only supposed to be there for breakfast, but, unsurprisingly, we ended up staying much, much longer than we had planned... And that was only during the first day!

Inside the hostel, you can find a handful of quirky items and artsy things, from posters and framed art to comic signposts and several other installations. As you can see, I had quite some fun taking photos of them.

The counter for the food area is divided into two: one being the main and the other is the beverage bar where I was a frequent for -- surprise, surprise -- coffee! While I am in no way fluent in Alcohol, I hear their 5-minute drink is the bomb, proven to get anyone off their face. If you've tried it, I'd love to hear your experience -- I'll assume it's an interesting one.

Although the menu offers quite a good list of meals for the hungry surfer, I do have to say that I was disappointed by the lack of options for those who don't do meat. As I bet you can imagine, my obvious struggle when traveling is finding food. But thankfully, the chef was kind enough to offer me a customized vegan dish, which turned out to be really yummy! It was sautéed beans and veggies with basil cauliflower rice and a side of fresh salad. Boy, do I wish it was an official item on the menu! As I do with more green and fresh options for healthy eaters to rejoice in.

Our long-lasted stays at Flotsam & Jetsam fruited beautiful short-lived friendships with our fellow tourists, as well as a magical, unexpected partnership between them and my Team Muni. I still find it funny how fast and easy it worked out for us and Mia (owner of F&J), but officially happening later this month (26th-27th) is a pop-up/music event brought by us and El Union Coffee! We will be bringing the THRIVE exhibit to La Union, with meetups, workshops, yoga, surfing and live music to happen, too! More details are coming soon, but I'm definitely looking forward to go back and celebrate living at Flotsam & Jetsam -- and I hope to have you celebrate with me! With the waves at their finest and the Filipino holiday spirit in full force, I don't think there's any better time to check out the place, really.
