Escolta

The historic east-west street in downtown Binondo has created an exciting buzz among artists, entrepreneurs, history geeks, and artsy-fartsies from literally any age group with Escolta Block Party! - an effort between HUB: Make Lab, 98B and First United Building to help the Queen of Manila's Streets regain its former luster. (Read: Escolta Neighborhood Guide)

If you've been outside the radar of Manila's creative scene, The "EB Party!" is a quarterly street party that combines art/historical tours, exhibits, lectures, workshops, street dancing (literally, people dancing in the streets), as well as a marketplace for all your crafts, food, and lifestyle needs. And just last August, I finally got an opportunity to check out the hype was all about.

Armed with beer and a Dana in hand (and with no further knowledge than this was just another "hipster" movement), my first Block Party turned out to be incredible and so much better I had ever expected. Created to be an avenue for the young people of our generation to experience its history, it also doubles to be an artist's trove of delightful finds such as trendy plants (I got a cactus which I now call Martha), handcrafted goodies, hand-me-down clothing, and many other lifestyle items - all of which had deeply filled my heart bliss.

And did I mention they play the best, grooviest music?

To give you a clearer picture, here's a short documentation of my trip to Escolta (as well as a meet-and-greet with my dear, Martha). May it entice you to attend the next one and give yourself a favor and grab a lovely little cold Chai Tea Latte, should they still sell it - I can only hope they do.
